    1970 Alternator question

    Hello,

On the rear of my alt. there "should" be a plug that has 2 wires. The previous owner must have cut it off. There are 2 wires, one is black with a white stripe and the other is brown w/ a white stripe. I have a new plug, but I don't know where which wire goes. I guess I have a 50-50 chance, but if someone knows, I would appreciate the input. BTW where do the wire come from and what are they doing.

    Thanks

    Mark.

    Re: 1970 Alternator question

There are actually four wires going to the alternator (at least on my 1970 big block). The 12 guage black wire is ground to the case, the 10 guage red wire goes to the terminal on the back of the case. There is a black with white stripe and a brown with white stripe set of wires that are connected to a gray plastic connector which connect to the back side edge of the alternator case. The black/ws wire is on top and the brown/ws wire is located below that (closer to the red wire. Both of these striped wires appear to be the same guage. Now the wiring diagram that I have (laminated) appears to show a 24 guage brn/ws wire and a 10 guage red wire as part of this connector. That may be where the confusion has set in. Anyway, I think these terminals go to the voltage regulator/brush leads.

    Hope this helps.
