CA Emissions

I have a '73 with a 'CLB' broadcast code stamped on the engine block (i.e. California emissions). I can find no references to CA emissons on any of the engine assembly diagrams in the '73 Assembly Guide.

Does anyone know what the differences are for a base model (L48) with CA emissions? Is this information documented anywhere?

I think it's pretty clearly covered in your copy of the '73-73 Technical Information Manual and Judging Guide Book. From Section 4, Emission Controls, Chassis:

"....Engine suffix indicates if the particular car underwent assembly line testing for California emissions, including the California emissions label. There was no discernable difference between California and Federal emissions Corvettes other than the label and suffix code."

While there were four different L48 engine suffixes used in 1973...all were configured with A.I.R. and equipped with the WJ broadcast code emission label 330560. Tune up specs differentiate between manual transmission (for both wide-ratio and close-ratio)and automatic transmission.

This is speculation but I suspect that to meet CA state emission requirements...GM had to certify that the vehicle met the California emission requirements and therefore used engine suffix codes CLB and CLC...even though the same setups were used for other L48s.

PS...AIMs do not always include all part numbers...especially when options and choices were available.
