    Anti Seize

When reassembling frame, suspension etc. during a restoration, should anti seize be used on all bolts. If so, any preferences?

    Thanks

    Re: Anti Seize

    Steve:

I didn't use anti seize, but, on the contrary, Loctite. The reasoning was to delay the loosening of most bolts from vibration. My car is ABSOLUTELY rattle free, and will probably stay that way for a long time to come.
I used ant seize on the exhaust manifold bolts, heat riser shaft, and engine pipe bolts.

      Re: Anti Seize

I used "Anti Seize" on my `62 Frame Off just before driving it out to the Steamboat Springs National. Quite a few fasteners vibrated loose. After getting home to the Niagara area I was told about using Loctite.

wouldn't this depend on the condition of the bolt that was removed? if it was badly rusted from water exposure, and if you had trouble getting it out [snapped it etc], and if it is likely that you will have to remove it again for some purpose then why not use anti seize [ie for exposed front shock bolts etc]? did the factory use loctitie on these?? i bet not. did they use anti-seize? i again bet not. i also used it on the rear lower shock mount as that will need to be dis-assembled on occasion to do suspension work etc and it was an absolute dog to pull the shock off of the mount. i have been doing this for about 4 years, and when i have had to re-loosen somthing, i never found that it has loosened on its own. wouldn't the lock washer keep it tight??

Re: Anti Seize causes the torque readings

to read lower than what is being applied to the bolt and you could snap the bolt off. "been there done that"

clem- ahaaaa... an excellent point! luckily that hasn't happened to me yet. i'll have to be careful, although it would seem that torque is torque, whether the threads are lubricated or not. still, your point is very well taken, as always.
i wonder how many other people have had bolts snap off after anti-seize while staying within torque specs??

Re: Anti Seize causes the torque readings

torque specs are listed using certain lubes and if you use one that reduces the friction more than the specified one you will over torque the bolt. that is why measuring the stretch of rod bolts is better than using a torque wrench. when you torque to spec you really are stretching the bolt. the big thing now is "torque to yeild" where they use a torque wrench and then turn the bolt a certain number of degrees more to get the proper stretch

                  Torque Info

The October 2003 Issue of Vett Vues Magazine has a technical article on this very subject (Engine Technology - Care and Feeding of Steel Connecting Rods). Maybe some of you engineer types can read it and explain it to the rest of us!
