When restoring the engine in my 67 327/350 roadster, what colors are the alternator brackets and the thermostat housing. It looks like the long alternator bracket was black, and the block mount was orange. It also looks like the thermostat housing was orange. Can anyone help? Thanks to all for the help so far. Scott

Re: 67 alternator bracket collors
Scott----
The alternator brace(the curved, upper adjustment brace)was GM #3881816 and was dip-painted semi-gloss black. The lower alternator support, GM #3846565, was painted Chevrolet orange engine color. The intake manifold mounted coolant outlet for your L-79 engine, GM #3827369, was of cast iron construction. My distinct recollection is that these cast iron outlets were painted engine color, even though the aluminum manifold was unpainted. Most other Corvette engines which had aluminum manifolds and aluminum outlets left the outlets unpainted. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 67 alternator bracket collors
Thanks Joe, I think you have answered my last two requests for help. I appreciate your help and knowledge. My experience with rebuilding my engine after 30 years of ownership has been fairly emotional and it's nice to know that there are sources to help me in my endeavors. Hopefully I will get my 67 back on the road soon. Thanks again, Scott- Top

Re: Correction to Above Post
Scott----
I gave you a bit of a "bum steer" on one point in my earlier post. The thermostat housing on your L-79 engine should be painted with aluminum paint, not engine color. I'd been thinking about that since I posted from my office without benefit of any references to check my recollections. I did a little further research and it appears that these housings were painted with aluminum paint. I realize that your housing appears to have been painted Chevy orange. However, it's possible that it was transferred from another engine with cast iron intake, in which case the housing would have been painted engine color. It's also possible, of course, that my recollections weren't so faulty and perhaps I did see some of these housings that were originally painted engine color. Anyway, "conventional wisdom" would hold that they were "all" painted with aluminum paint when installed on aluminum manifolds. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 67 alternator bracket colors
Hi Joe, Thanks again and I apologize for the spelling error. But I am not sure what you mean when you say 'aluminum paint'. I assume that you mean aluminum color, but is there a special aluminum color just to match the L89 aluminum intake manifold? Scott- Top

Re: 67 alternator bracket colors
Scott----
There is no particular aluminum paint that I am aware of formulated for this purpose. Most aluminum paints are pretty much the same, anyway. In fact, many original Chevrolet aluminum manifolds were entirely painted with aluminum paint. The original manifold on my L-78 1968 Chevelle (which I purchased new and kept for only about 2 years)was this way.
Anyway, as I said, I think about any high quality aluminum paint will work fine. However, if it were me, I think I'd use "Alumiblast" paint available from Quanta and many others. Primarily, this paint is used to "restore" the original aluminum appearance of aluminum parts without beadblasting them. I think it would work perfectly for this application, though. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 67 alternator bracket closer look
Joe, Sorry to disagree but the cast iron water neck as well as the aluminum intake manifold were painted silver (mist coat) at engine assembly after orange was applied on 67 L79's. The lower alternator bracket was painted orange as you stated. It was hanging down suspended by one water pump bolt at time of orange paint application. The exhaust manifolds were not assembled at time of orange paint application thus the alternator bracket dangeled. An outline of this bracket can be seen on the timing cover of untouched originals. The water necks on 300 horse version was painted orange with cast iron intake manifold.- Top
