    C-1 1959 Body Question

The lower baffle behind and below the grille-is the baffle on the ends to be glued or do you use screws or bolts into the inner fender skirts. The aim does not show this. My 1960 is glued but I want to make shure on the 59. Thanks

    Re: C-1 1959 Body Question

    Hi Jerry,
My 59 has the baffle screwed on just like my 60 did. I have seen a couple of cars with the panel bonded in with bonding cement, but I do not believe that any cars left the factory like this. The panel is held on at the rear with small indented head machine screws that bolt to an angle that attaches to the radiator support. At the front end, it is held in place by indented hex head sheetmetal screws and sheet metal clip-over nutplates. The rear screws are the same screws that are used on the radiator shroud of your 60 and the front screws are similar to the ones that secure the splash pans to the frame except that they have captive flat washers on them. If you need a picture of the installation, drop me an Email tonight and I will snap you a pic and send it to you.

    Regards, John McGraw

If I am understanding you correctly that area is all bonded together on my '59. The bonding adhesive is up to 1/4" thick in some seams. I'll email you a picture of the inside and outside views. Let me know if I missed what you needed to see.

Jerry: Might not be much help, but my 60 is as John described. The ends on mine are glued to the inner fenders and the front is held to the lower surround by 7/16 hex head bolts and the upper part is held to the radiator core suport by 5/16 hex head machine screws.
I can also send you a picture if you need one.

opps. I thought you were talking about the valance. Anyway the baffle on my car, #881, is screwed on just like John describes. The ends are attached with two 1/4x3/4"? hex bolts through the 90 degree flange on the ends. The twist to what John said though is that there was a glob of bonding adhesive applied before it was bolted in. Also there was a bead of bonding adhesive run on the valance panel before it was screwed down. Just on the flat area and not on the bumper mount passages.

I have owned this car since it was 10 years old and this part of the car is still virgin and never been apart. The beads are consistant with all the rest of the bonding beads in the front of the car (sloppy)and the factory blackout finish is still the only paint in this area. I shot a couple pictures if you would like to see them.

p.s. The bolts are only visable from the under side.
