I have a 64 300 hp 327 w/o air or power steering, just a basic no option car. The fan belt runs crooked and I believe that the alternator pulley should be spaced forward. I have seen a nice original 300 hp 64 and it had such a pulley. Does anyone know if it should have a special pulley with a spacer between the pulley and the alternator?
The original alternator pulley used for your application was GM #3844101. This pulley had an OD of 2-15/16" and a groove width of 3/8". It was discontinued in 1965 and replaced by pulley GM #3871241 which continued to be available until it was discontinued in March, 1976. The 3871241 pulley was almost identical to the 3844101. It's OD was 2-53/64", but it was otherwise the same.
Both of the above-refernced pullies were of the machined steel type and had a thick, integral "spacer" on the inboard side. This "spacer" appears like a really wide inboard groove "ridge". Your pulley should match this description. If it doesn't, then you have an incorrect pulley. As far as I know, no other spacer was used with this pulley for your application.
Although this pulley is long-since GM discontinued, it's available in reproduction from sources like Dr. Rebuild and Paragon.
