    1971,454 ,Radiator Supply Tank Clamps

This question is in regards to the Radiator Supply Tank on a Air Conditioned 454. Page C60 Sheet D5 of the assembly manual show the clamps that hold the tank to the brackets. Although both clamps have the same part number 3956045 they appear to be quit different in that the rear clamp has a cut out or groove in it to accomodate the pipe on the rear of the tank. The front clamp appears to be the same width all the way around its lenght with no groove. Could someone with one of these please verify this for me.

Since you haven't gotten a response yet, I'll take a look at my '72 LS5 / C60 tonight when I get home and post a reponse.

I took a look at my car last night. First let me say that I believe my car is very original ( 28k miles ) that no one has messed with - much. My tank's has the 2 clamps, and the front one is th one that is notched. The back one is not notched that I can see. The notch on the front clamp is located in such a way that I can't see it having any useful purpose - so perhaps it is supposed to be installed to the rear.

Now the question will be - is it installed wrong, and if so - when.

Sorry, but I bet this doesn't clear anything up for you.

Thanks for your response. I am glad to hear the front clamp is notched. It appears to me that the rear clamp has to have a notched in order to fit around the exit pipe at the bottom rear of the tank. This is hard to see because it is on the bottom and the notch fits around the tank nipple that the heater hose attaches too. If you examine it closely I think you will be able to confirm this. If so both clamps must have the notch with the front one serving no useful purpose as you stated. I would also be interested in knowing if the clamps and brackets are painted Gloss Black as with the tank. Thanks again for your HELP.

I have 2 '72 LS5/C60 cars. One is the bowtie candidate ( I hope ) and the other is completely dismantled.

When I get home tonight, I'll take some pictures for you of both the assembled and the disassembled tanks and straps. I can tell you now that the the original finish on the bowtie cars tank is almost completely gone. It was a shade of black at one time, but has most of its brass showing. I pretty sure the straps are still black, but I would commit to the finish being unchanged ( ie: still glossy ). Probably could take the front one loose and look under under it though.

          I'll send ya pics tonight.

OK so I looked really close at both car's tanks and straps - all 4 straps are identical - they have the notch and a "GT" stamping. I'm also sure that the original finish on the clamps and brackets was Gloss Black - much glossier than semi-flat - probably used radiator gloss black. I took some pics and can email if you like.

I can't thank you enough. The information you provided has been invaluable. I appreciate you taking pictures, but don,t feel they will be necessary. You went to so much trouble to answer my question, maybe someday I will be able to return the favor.

              Thanks again
