    ignition timing c/3

Hi I just purchased a new HEI distributor for my 1975 L48. I noticed that the rotor lined up with the # 8 post on the dist.cap. Damper located at zero mark on tab with # 1 on compression stroke. I then moved the oil pump shaft so the slot is aligned with the No.5 intake so the rotor would line up correctly with the #1 post this resulted in the engine firing but just barely. Could the timing chain or gears or cam and lifters be so worn that all this won't work?
Thanks as always for the input.

#1 and #6 fire 360 degrees from each other in a Chevy, timing on #5 will make the timing WAY retarded.
