I have finished an almost complete restoration of my '62 327 300hp with AT. I installed a renewed AFB carb. Idling is erratic. The only way I can get a fairly smooth idle is to set the mixture screws rich and it blows some black smoke! Also when I stop with a hot [180 deg] engine there is a strong gasoline smell in the engine compartment and the filter bowl is 1/4 to 1/2 full.Any suggestions? Alan Kingston

Re: C1 Carb problems
A few questions:
Did you "renew" the carb or was it done by an outside vendor? If a vendor, who are they and what is their reputation?
Is it the correct carb for a '62 300HP PG - 3310S according to the NCRS Spec Guide?
Does the engine have a road draft tube crankcase vent system or the California closed system?
Does the carb mounting have the correct gasket, spacer, and heat shield?
The nominal initial idle mixture screw setting is 1.5 turns out from the seat. How are they currently set?
Is your initial timing correct? (Set with the vacuum can signal line disconnected and plugged.)
When the vacuum signal line is connected is the total idle timing equal to the initial setting plus full vacuum advance? Assuming the initial setting is 8 and total vacuum advance is 16, the total idle timing should be about 24.
What are the numbers stamped on the vacuum can bracket?
