C2: Quanta gas tank vs. new repro

In a posting from last December Jack Humphrey noted that some of the Quanta gas tanks he has seen had the OL Anderson embossing cocked 90 degrees from the orientation in known original tanks. Is this still the case?

Also, in the latest issue of Corvette Fever, one company (maybe Corvette America?) has a new products ad for a mid-year (+/- other years) gas tank that they claim is an exact copy of the
original tank with the Anderson logo, and correct wall thickness, indents, etc. Does anyone know how this tank compares with the Quanta tank?

    Thanks in advance,

    Gary----

As far as I know, only Quanta is "licensed" to use the O.L. Anderson logo. When I saw the Corvette America ad you mention, I assumed that they were getting their tanks through Quanta.

The O.L.Anderson logo is not visible when the tanks are installed in the car for any 63-74 Corvette when the spare tire carrier is also installed. If one leaves out the spare tire carrier so that the judges can see the O.L. Anderson logo, one will lose more points for the lack of spare tire and carrier than they could hope to get for having the correct logo on the fuel tank.

I feel pretty sure that the Quanta tanks are manufactured for them by another manufacturer. In other words, I doubt that Quanta manufactures these tanks in-house. In their case, the manufacturer adds the logo to the tanks for the "batch" that they order. I think that the same manufacturer likely also makes tanks for other vendors including, possibly, GM.

I would expect that the manufacturer is probably someone like Superior Tank, a large manufacturer of aftermarket replacement fuel tanks for a variety of applications.

      Gary,

I purchased the Quanta tank several months ago for my 64 convertible. It is a very good reproduction. The OL Anderson logo is embossed in the same location and with the same oriention as the original. There is only the slightest flaw in the logo, and that is that if you were to compare the two side by side, you would see that the stamping from Quanta is not as sharp as the original. I don't believe that the logo can be seen from under the car when the tire tub is in place. The logo can be seen by looking through the fuel filler, and I don't believe that anyone could tell the difference between the Quanta and the original from that perspective. I don't believe that anyone but Quanta is reproducing the tank with the logo. If others are selling a tank with a logo, they are more than likely Quanta tanks.

      Regards, Phil

I stopped by the Quanta booth at Carlyle and was surprised that there was a "Made in Canada" label on al their displayed tanks.

Being from Canada I was interested to see of I could bypass customs so I asked them that question and got a very curt 'NO". They wouldn't tell me who in Canada makes them.

            Steve-----

I believe that Superior Tank, the aftermarket supplier of fuel tanks that I mentioned, is located in Canada. If that's the case, they might as well have told you that; Superior Tank does not sell its products direct to the public.
