    68 frame weight F.Y.I.

Took my bare 68 frame to my local solid waste operation to use their scales just to see what the real deal was weight wise.

Including the newly installed kickup braces, internal rust proofing and paint, it came out to 260lbs.

So, for those inquiring minds who want to know, theres the +/- of it

good to know, I would have guessed they weighed a lot more than that.

Thanks for your effort, I was curious about it as well.

What internal rustproofing did you use and what paint is on the outside

      Thanks

        Re: I tell you what,

My mode of moving this thing around is to rest the main crossmember between the coil towers on a small dolly and just pickup the a _ _ and jig it around.

After about thirty or so sessions of lift and position, it feels more like 460

        I was guessing 325

Ten years ago I might have thought 260

Hmm...I wonder I would have guessed ten years from now? 660?

          Re: Frame coatings

I used ZERO RUST purchased through Whitney.

I was going to do a great stroke of business by using a cheap rust proofing gun, but after litterally hours of fooling around with it and getting more on me than on the frame I gave up. The good part is now I'll never rust out

Plan "B" I went to work and taped up all openings, poured in the ZERO RUST and rolled the frame over and around.

          Of course I didn't lose a drop(yeah right)

I figure all in all after draining off the excess, I probably used about half a gallon but I appreciated having the volume of the full gallon to gaurantee a solid flow over all internal walls.

It was a messy deal so (if) you go this route, I suggest lots of cardboard latex type gloves, coveralls you don't mind trashing, old shoes and at least one extra set of helping hands suited similarly.....I told you it was messy. You just cant seal every everything, it will drip out guaranteed!!!

I then cleaned and shot the frame with John Deere medium gloss black that came out (in my estimation anyway)looking very close to the real deal.

FYI, I also sprayed loose components such as the front and rear removable crossmembers, related braces and controll arms with the J.D. high gloss and man it do gloss! I need sunglasses (super shine)

Of course these blacks as well as good ole J.D. Blitz Black are sold in spray cans, so you can do test coating to see if it will do what you want.

            Re: I tell you what,

I think the Muncie transmissions have gotten considerably heavier too in the last 20 years. I used to pull one out and put it on my chest and then roll it off on the ground, done it dozens of times. I pulled the M-22 out of my 69 Z/28 a few years ago to change a noisy throw out bearing and tried the same thing. I thought I was gonna have to yell for help. They always used to seem so light when I was in my 20's.

                Does Scott Dixon know this?

Don't use John Deere Blitz Black. It's meant for plough bottoms and has no longevity. I'd stick to a quality epoxy with a flattening agent Just my 2 cents Ed
