    396 Air Cleaner Finish

I've seen 396 air cleaners with a glossy black finish as well as a semi-gloss black finish.

    Which one is correct?

I'm certainly not an expert on these 65 air cleaner lids. However, I've seen a lot of them over the years. In fact, I saw my first one when a very good friend of mine bought a 65 L-78 equipped Corvette brand new in April of 1965, when we were both still in high school. I remember looking at the engine with him and being awe-struck by it. Anyway, I distinctly remember commenting that you'd think that they would have at least put a chrome air cleaner lid on it. In fact, he tried to sell me that car before he left for Viet Nam the following year, where, unfortunately, he was killed almost immediately after arriving. I couldn't afford the insurance on the car, though, so I had to pass.

Anyway, my recollection of these air cleaner lids is that they are not a full gloss black. It's somewhere between a gloss and semi-gloss, and really closer to semi-gloss. In fact, I always understood that these lids were finished with an electrostatic powder coating process. This was the same process used to finish the canister-type oil filter housings used from 1956-1967 on all Chevrolet engines. It appears like paint, but it is considerably more durable.

Right you are, Joe! Two Colorado 396 enthusiasts siting around before Sunday dinner just rifled the stock pile of lids in the basement and neglecting weather/wear agree lid is less bright than base (suspect base was electrostatic paint job) and lid's in the 80% gloss range.
