    61 Suspension / Steering ??

My car makes a popping noise when trying to turn while going real slow, like while getting out of the driveway. It also binds a little near center or straight, but once you get a little off center in either direction it gets much easier to turn. I've gotten used to it, but my boyfriend says it makes the car veer when your turning and thought something was wrong or unsafe.

I'd like to find someone familiar with these cars or these problems and get some good advice as to what is wrong before I spend a lot of money fixing anything.

The only thing really different about my car is that it has the RPO 687 package with HD suspension and brakes as well as the quick steering option. I want to make sure that those options stay in tact since that is a rare option on these vettes.

    Thanks!! Cynthia

I have pictures of the steering /suspension here:

sounds like the worm +/or sector in the steering box has been damaged previously(common when offset or wider that 15 x 5 1/2 hweels are used and the wheels take a hit on a curb. Fellows who rebuild c-1 steering boxes advertise in the DRIVELINE> I too have an rpo 61 what's your vin? mike

      Cynthia,
Don't know what the popping noise means, probably not good. The design of the steering box does have a "high" side feel at dead ahead. This means it is a little harder to turn past (either side) of the "high" side. There are two adjustments, to set the box to specifications. This is explained in the ST-12. Good idea to take this manual with you wherever you go for service. ST-12 also explains how to achieve the correct geometry from the steering wheel to the steering rod inside the column to the third arm position. Once this geometry is correct (can be done by eyeball) then toe-in of both wheels can be adjusted. Quick steer will not effect the way to go about any of the above. Regards,

I like how you showed pic's , Mike is right if the worm and sector have a chip in them from removing the steering wheel using a hammer to get it loose,it will feel funny going stright. Get the vett up on stands in front, then turn the wheel left and right to feel any loose play at center.

Unfortunately I know the popping noise sound. Not sure when it started but over the past 19 years it has gotten progressively worse. As Mike mentioned, the steering box likely has damage. Years ago, my car was shod with a set of 60 series Eagles. Looked good, but after the popping got worse I pulled them off and went to a narrower profile tire.
