C3 PF-454 current service replacement and points?

I'm curious about the current oil filter part # that has changed for GM and it's affect on judging. My judging manual is a few years old and lists a 7 pt deduction "for the current replacement AC filter (PF-25)." It specifically calls out the "PF-25" rather than simply saying 'current replacement' and leaving it at that.

A) The 'current' filter is the PF-454: - are the SAME 7 points deducted?

B) And -12 points for the PF-1218 (replacing the PF-35) deducted?

As a "strict constructionist" I would opine that "current replacement" would apply to the PF454 since the PF-25 is out of production and has been replaced by the PF 454. In other words, same deduction even though it is a different part number than OE and an inch shorter.

Sound like you need the 3rd edition of the Judging Guide. The latest judging sheets only assign 8 pts. total to the oil filter. The Judging Reference Manual allows up to 90% for GM current replacement.

You didn't mention what year C3 that you have. Why does that matter since all C3s originally used the PF-25 oil filter, didn't they? The answer is: NO, they did not.

A little known fact is that 1968 Corvettes originally used an AC PF-29 oil filter. This filter may also have been used for very early 1969's, too. The PF-29 had the same, or nearly the same, size cannister as the PF-25. How it otherwise differed I don't know (yet), but it was marked PF-29 and not PF-25.

The PF-29 was discontinued from SERVICE in January, 1970 and replaced, for SERVICE, by the PF-25.

Now, how's that for information to "rock the world" of 68 afficionado's?

Todd In the shark years the new manuals usally do not assign points any more as they leave it up to the judge to take the deduction based on the part in question.I would judge the oil filter on the Corvette with the five areas of originalty. They are configeration,date, completeness, installation,and finish. The 73-77 sheets have 5 points for the oil filter originality. I have not seen the 454 filter but I think it is smaller, not white, wrong logo, not complete. It is installed correct so it gets one point and any more you can make it fit one of the above five areas of originality. Lyle
