I'm looking for feedback about owning or operating a vintage car (particularly my 70 LT-1) in the states of MD or VA. I may be relocating to the DC area, and could live on either side of the border. Insurance? Theft rate? Taxes? Driving in a spirited manner? Local chapter activities?
I live in Richmond and own a '64 convertible. Taxes are negligible - less than $100 (may be less than $50). I don't have any tickets, and pay $450 a year on insurance (not collector - agreed value full 250K/500K coverage). My 1 year old car and 1999 minivan are each more (all on the same policy). Local chapter activities is a downside here - the midatlantic chapter is great, but its activities seem to be focused more in NVa - but you would be all set up near DC.
We pay no personal prop. taxes on corvettes here in md. Tags are 35/yr(i.25/yr if its a farm use vet), insurance(no collision) is 60/yr from state farm for vintage vets.I believe the va residents pay a personal prop tax yearly on all their vehicles. MAC chapter is very active in no. va, westn md, and the tidewater area of va. Both states are below the mason dixon line. If you choose md, go wast towards or even beyond the fredrick , md. area for less costly real estate tthan closer in to the beltway. mike
Hey Kevin, I think that most insurance rates, at least around this area, are determined by your Zip code. Zip areas with a high theft rate cost the owner more accordingly. When I moved to western Maryland last year, my insurance premium from J.C.Taylor went from $400 a year down to $350, just because of the low loss statistics.
Wherever you move around here, don't be too far from Tony's Corvette Shop in Gaithersburg, Md. I know Tony very well and as far as I'm concerned, his shop has no equal, honest. He even rents out 75-80 Dragaway a couple times a year, just for his Corvette customers. Any other questions....you have my private email address. Patrick
I live in Northern VA and have a '64 Corvette Convertible. I pay no personal property tax on the Vette and very little on my other vehicles. The tax has almost been abolished but was put on hold due to the current budget crunch. You can register your car as an antique for a one time fee that is about $10 and never have to bother with inspections, personal property tax.
Lots of Corvette activities around the DC area with several clubs and the MAC chapter being active. Also, Northern VA is only about a two hour drive from Carlisle. Easy to get to each year.
