Collector car insurance and NY State

    For anybody in NY:
I have American Collector Insurance agency in NJ and they have me insured with American Bankers Insurance out of Florida. For 2 years in a row, I pay my premium, they send me a policy and ID cards and 3 weeks later, NY State sends me a letter saying I have no insurance and I should turn in my plates along with my first born child.

The Insurance company is apologetic, it seems "the girl who does this was on vacation/ had a death in the family/ won the lottery/ etc." Last year it took 2 months of phone calls to get NY off my back.

Any of you NY guys had a similar problem? Should I be looking at another Insurance agent? Or am I just unlucky?

Rich... I found similar concerns with crazy NYS restrictions for my vette. I went with Grundy Worldwide out of PA. They have reasonable rates and do not limit mileage (215-674-1856). I am thinking of switching though. Alan Blay of www.solidaxle.org has slightly better rates and is on Long Island where I live. He also could insure my "daily" cars as a package deal. He owns about 8 1953 vettes! He is in Bellmore,NY at 516-679-0001. Goof luck...Bruce #390243

        Re: Check ANPAC Chrome

        Gents,
Last year I changed all my insurance to American National Property and Casualty Company (ANPAC). Best deal going in the central Ohio area.

They have a special division that insures Classic, Hot Rod, Replica, Originals, Modified, Exotic cars - hense the name CHROME.

I'm not sure if they have agents in NY, but you can check their website for information or call number listed. Website: www.anpac.com Phone: 1-800-CAR-BUFF.

        Hope this helps many folks,
        Gene

Thanks guys. It doesn't look like ANPAC does business in NY, but I'll check further. Also I have "bookmarked" Grundy's site and Hagerty's site and will check with them if I don't get a good feeling when I call my agent tomorrow.

Bruce, I will also check the solid axel guy. BTW, how's that pretty '61 doing?

I have had the same insurance for the last 3 years without a problem with the NYS DMV. I recently added a second car (2 months ago). DMV had no problem with the insurance cards.

              An update.

NYS has a website that allowed me to respond to the letter by entering my insurance info. When I did that, it told me "never mind, your company has provided the required info". I guess what happened was when the old policy lapsed in september, they had to send in a notice, meanwhile I had paid the premium to renew in August. I guess the insurance co sent the renewal after the cancellation and after NYS fired off the letter. It's interesting, but apparently NYS doesn't tell you things are ok unless you ask. What makes me nervous is they say the next letter will be a suspension of license and registration for 6 months. I had this happen with my regular insurance once. In a nutshell, it works like this: Insurance Co computer fails to transfer records to NYS computer. Result? Your license and registration are suspended.
