    RE: Oil Pump & Lifters

Well just give me the idiot of the year award right now. I wrote last week about collapsed lifters and funky oil pressure readings on the gusge. This is what I found just before draining the oil out of the pan and getting into a plastiguage check of the bearings and possible oil pump replacement. I ran the motor and watched the oil pressure guage peg to 60 and fall back to 30 and then 10, reved it and got the same. "Let me just check the dipstick to see how dirty the oil is.... WHAT!?!?!? not reading on the dipstick!!!!" I added 1 quart of oil at a time, it took 3... restarted the engine and the guage stays at 60, no lifter noise, smooth idle. Road test was fine. So... hopefully disaster averted, I still have to figure out what happened to 3 quarts of oil in 6 months, no smoke, no big puddles and the water is clean. It was hard to admit this to the board, but I figured we all need a reminder to check the simple things first!!! Thanks!

If it makes you feel any better...

I had a similar experience with manual transmission a few years ago. Just before removing the trans to repair gear noise, already on the lift, I checked the oil level. Never saw any oil on drive or parking lot.

These cars sit for long periods of time without starting. This is a formula for piston ring blow-by. My wife has a 75 with a oil usage problem which developed because it sat for long periods of time. I may end up giving it a ring job or just keep checking and adding oil.

Don't feel like the Lone Ranger here Jim, I replaced a timing chain once because I "ran out of gas" during a hard acceleration.

My fuel gauge didn't work, but I "just knew" I had at least a quarter tank.

Humble pie tastes better a couple years after you eat it.....
