My son bought a '71 base model convertible with nom 350 and automatic trans about 4 years ago in Calif. He didn't check the title against the vinand now has a buyer for it. Somewhere along the line the DMV didn't record the vin# correctly. the seventh digit was recorded as a 8 instead of a S and the next digit which is supposed to be a 1 is missing. The 1 is part of the sequence #'s. The vin tag doesn't look like it has been fooled with. Today we looked for the vin# on the frame above the rear wheel with a mirror but couldn't find it. The CHP needs two numbers. So we are wondering if the trans is orig. would it have a vin# on it and where?

Re: Vin# on Trans?
Steve-----
If the THM-400 trans in the car is original to the car, it WILL have the VIN-derivative stamped on it. Usually, this is found in the vicinity of the transmission data plate which is attached to the right side vertical surface of the transmission. This plate is either blue, black, or yellow (I forget which for a 71). Near it, will be stamped the VIN derivative.
The VIN-derivative on the frame should also be visible if you clean the area thoroughly with a small brush inserted between the frame rail and the body. It's usually found on the left side top frame rail surface, just rearward of the welded-in crossmember behind the differential crossmember. You'll need a mirror to see the number, though. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Vin# on Trans? *TL*
The VIN derivative on TH400 transmissions is stamped on a pad just above the trans pan, on the driver's side of the transmission. It is right below the gear selector lever, and depending on the gear it is in, the bellows for the linkage may partially obscure the numbers.
We are too used to looking at the passenger side for numbers on manual transmissions.

Re: Found it!
Steve-----
My apologies for the incorrect information. I should stay away from these auto trans questions as my knowlwdge is quite limited regarding them. In this case, though, I thought that the information that I provided came from a "reliable source".In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
