    1960 Wheel Cylinder

My research leads me to believe that my standard front wheel cylinders are 1-3/16" cylinder, but all I can find through current vendors is HD, 1-1/8" diameter cylinder. Will the HD work on my car? If not, who sells the correct size wheel cylinders?

I know White Post can re-sleeve my old ones, but at $80 each to re-sleeve I would prefer to purchase new wheel cylinders.

    Joe-----

You are correct; your 1960 with standard brakes did use 1-3/16" front wheel cylinders. These cylinders, even under their final GM part numbers, are no longer available.

The following Raybestos wheel cylinders should SERVICE your application. I don't know, though, if these are 1-3/16" or 1-1/8". Either way, these particular units should work:

    right---WC34151

    left----WC34152

My Raybestos catalog lists 33248/9 front wheel cylinders for all 60-63 full size passenger cars and 63-65 drum brake Corvette and references them as 1 1/16".

The Corvette section for '60-'62 only lists front wheel cylinders for HD brakes - 33501/2.

      I can't find a reference to 34151/2. Are these 1 1/8" front wheel cylinders?

        Joe and Duke-----

The numbers I provided are the current Raybestos part numbers for the front wheel cylinders. I don't know what the size of the bore is, but they should SERVICE the application.

The last iteration of the GM wheel cylinders SERVICED BOTH the 58-62 Corvette front application AND the 63-65 Corvette front application. I am assuming that aftermarket will be the same. However, if aftermarket are not the same, then the wheel cylinders I mentioned by Raybestos part number may not work for the 58-62 Corvette application.

          Joe,

If you have the original GM wheel cylinders, they should have the bore diameter cast into them. I had all four of mine re-sleeved in S/S by Mark Frappier. He specializes in S/S sleeving of automotive hydraulic brakes. His phone number is 800-528-5235. He is half the price that you say White Post charges. Once sleeved, you have a wheel cylinder that is superior to the original cast iron. His hours are 10AM-8PM Eastern time.

I ran into this same problem on my 62. After about 15 minuets with a brake hone and a couple of $5 kits, I was back in business. If the bores are pitted in the center but not in the area where the seals contact there is no real need to sleeve. (Unless you just want to be anal about it.)
