The starter gets mounted with two bolts. They are diagnal to each other. You may require that a shim be installed between the starter and the block for proper adjustment of the starter.
All chevy small blocks have 3 holes.

Floyd, if the AIM says it only uses two bolts, then it only uses two bolts. You will find few, if any, exceptions to the AIM. The fact that a part has more holes than required only says that it may have more than one GM application.

If you want to see if your car has the original starter, check the stamped date and model on the starter and compare it to the car's build date and the NCRS spec book. Expect a date stamp like "3A28", where "3" is the year, "A" is the month (January) and "28" is the day.

On earlier Corvettes, I would not be surprised for them to have the original starter where alternators, carbs, and master cylinders may have been changed. From my experience, however, 72 and later Chevy SB starters began to expire earlier due to higher engine operating temperatures.

        Floyd-----

As Bob mentioned, all Chevrolet starters mount with 2 bolts to the block. Some use the "diagonal" pattern and some use the "straight across" pattern. The blocks are drilled and tapped for both. The "diagonal" pattern is generally used for starters used on engines with a 168 tooth flywheel. The "straight across" pattern is generally used for engines with a 153 tooth flywheel.

All 1973 Corvettes used the a 168 tooth flywheel or flexplate so the diagonal pattern starter was used.
