    Allen Mufflers

I am considering replacing my '76 exhaust with a (1974) dual exhaust (no Cat) from Allen's. My stock exhaust is very quite and I am thinking about using a muffler made by Allen which has one less baffle in it.

Has anyone used or heard this exhaust? I am looking for the sound something like an early C3 (mellow but not obnoxious).

Don't try that in Illinois. Here, even the antiques must be in the smog configuration that left the factory. When you go in for your biennial EPA test, they slide a mirror under the car to check that the catalyst pack is there.

Thanks for the input. I live in Georgia and cars over 25 years are exempt from emmission inspections. The car currently does not have the catalytic converter and has been registered here for over a year.

As an option to having the converter, is to purchase the aftermaket universal fit, and remove the catalyst from inside it. Outwardly it looks real and legit. Some of the early GM converters were a pellet type and actually had a removeable plug on the bottom. This was for their replacing the pellets with fresh. Remove the plug, dump the pellets and repace the plug.

By the way that catalyst is ceramic, coated with a mixture of platinum, palladium, and rhodium. Last I checked, platinum was about $500 a troy ounce, palladium about $200 and rhodium about $2500. There's about $20 worth of the precious metals in the converter.

I recently installed a set of mufflers from Allens on my 70.When i called Allens I told them I wanted the exhaust to sound slightly better than stock, but not as loud as Flowmasters tend to.The mufflers they are recomending to you sound like they would be the same as I installed. They sound nice-not obnoxious.I do not have the invoice handy or I would give you the part #.

Corvette mufflers on catalytic equiped vehicles have less restriction than mufflers which came on cars with out the catalytic converter. Hence a stock 1976 muffler has less restriction (and a louder tone) when used in a true non-catalytic dual exhaust system than the muffler designed for the true dual exhaust. I converted my 1978 S. A. car to true duals and adapted the new 1978 mufflers to the system.
