    64 Shocks Black & Gray

According to the 64 judging guide, if a 64 has a vin # under 9000 the rear shocks are painted black and the front shocks are grey, correct? Also will the GM #4975486 & #22011967 be correct replacement shocks for a 64? Thanks Don...

Serial number 9000 is about the correct changeover point from black to gray painted shock absorbers. The actual shock specification change took place on January 8, 1964, but, as to when this actually started showing up on the cars is probably a fact lost in antiquity with respect to the exact date.

The shock absorber part numbers which you mentioned, GM #4975486 and GM #22011967, are the closest that you can get in a NEW shock today with respect to matching the external configuration of the original shocks. However, I do not recommend these shocks. That's because Delco Reactec shocks have IDENTICAL external configuration to these AND modern gas-charged internals. Part numbers are 22065207 and 22065208 or Delco # 560-50 and 560-51. These shocks represent the best of both worlds. Original EXTERNAL configuration and contemporary shock INTERNAL technology.
