    C2 ENGINE INSTALLATION/BELLHOUSING

I'll be installing my engine into the chassis with the body off. regarding the bellhousing, is it easier to install with the bellhousing on the engine, or attached to the transmission. I'll be working alone, with the typical "rented" engine hoist.

If the body is off why not assemble the transmission and engine and drop it in as a unit. It can be done this way with the body on also.

I installed my 327/300 with 4 spd attached into my 1965 by myself with the borrowed engine puller. No problem although I hear there is a "thing" called an engine leveler which makes things easier. But the whole job can be done the old fashion way by one person.

Definitely assemble the engine and transmission before you place it on the frame. When you pick up the assembly, pick a location on the chain that keeps the whole assembly level. I typically attach a short length of chain to the bolt holes on the vertical surfaces of the heads at oppisite corners across the manifold. Use grade 8 bolts. Then place bolts thru the chain links at the lift point to keep the hoist hook from sliding on the chain. I did mine by myself... no problem. If you have it tilted toward the rear a little, the transmission mount will make first contact. Place a bolt in the mount to capture/stabilize that point and then you only need to worry about guiding the front mounts.

The transmission is the rear mount. It is easier to mount it as one unit, particularly is you are alone.

I found the assembly of the composite unit of the engine & transmission away from the frame harder than installing the engine with flywheel and clutch as one unit and the transmission bellhousing fork and throw-out bearing as another unit. The the two units were then mated together on the frame.

I installed the engine on the frame mounts and kept it raised in the back a few inches with the engine crane for clearance. I then simply slid the transmission bellhousing unit into the clutch bolted the bellhousing to the block and lower the engine transmission unit on the transmission mounts and bolted it up.

I did this alone in less than a ½ an hour.

            Good luck
