    '57 Engine Compartment Paint

Quanta, Engine Compartment Black, (Semiflat), vs. GM Reconditioning Paint vs. Any other product. What is the preferred paint for the Engine Compartment. Thanks again for the valuable information.

    Best Wishes,

I think that either of the 2 products that you mentioned will work just about equally well. They are exactly the 2 that I would recommend. The GM reconditioning paint, GM #1050104, is only supplied in gallon cans, though. So, that might be a consideration in making a choice.

          Geoffrey----

I hadn't checked on it this morning when I posted the response, but I just did. Right you are! It's history. There's one that lasted for a LOT of years (around 40+), but it's now a part number that's "entered into rest" for eternity. GM never reuses, and wisely so, any part number. I wonder how long it will be before even the 8 digit series is "used up" and they have to resort to a 9 number system?

Dale convinced me to try John Deere Blitz Black on my '56, and, when I did, it was too glossy. I had used it from the quart and, at the time, Dale said that might be the problem. He had always used if from the spray can and never used a quart and a sprayer. At the time, my brother-in-law, who mixes car paint, told me of SEM product's spray can of "Trim Black" number 39143. It is just right and looks correct when I compare it to others. See what you think. It takes about 4 cans to do the compartment thoroughly(3 coats). Most auto paint stores carry it.

Hate to be the #1 jerk of the century, but how many of Dale's restorations ever hit the judging field for scrutiny... I dare say none... So, if Dale were to respond, how did he compile the knowledge for that response.

                Re: '57 Engine Compartment Paint

                Bob,
I have allways just used lacquer paint which has been flattened. If you go down to your local PPG dealer and get some Tuxedo Black (DDL 9300, if I remember right) and ask them to flatten it to an eggshell sheen. This makes for a blackout paint that dries almost imediately and has almost no overspray like enamel paint. This what the factory used, and probably for these very reasons.
If you are looking for a spray can blackout paint, then the Blitz Black is pretty good paint, but it takes awhile to dry and has a fair overspray. The other caveat about the enamel paints, is be sure that you do not shoot any lacquer paint over where the enamel blackout paint has been sprayed or the paint will probably lift and blister.

                Regards, John McGraw

I always use dupont lacquer with a fast dry thinner on engine compartments . It will dry semi gloss because of the texture of the engine compartment . and if needed you can add a little flatner . Bill

Dennis, I sure hope someone doesn't make this kind of a statement about YOU when YOU are taking a dirt nap!
Not fair to blast a fellow black hat when he's taking a dirt nap and cannot speak for himself.

                      Just my opinion!

I think your wrong on that, Dale had enough judging sheets to wallpaper his shop bathroom with.
