I had my engine rebuild and gave the builder a set of freeze plugs, without markings. (purchased from CC). When he tried to install them, they were undersize, so he used the once he always uses (with markings) Which plugs are visible after engine mtg or starter are installed ? Could the plugs, which are visible at judging, be ground, so the markings are not visible ? Or should I just leeve it ? What is the deduction, if the plugs have markings? Where could I buy plugs w/o markings, that fit?
I don't know where to get the "unmarked" freeze plugs. Even GM-sourced plugs might be "marked" these days. Since the plugs are already installed, I wouldn't go messing around with trying to remove and replace them.
If the markings are very lightly stamped, then you could probably grind them out carefully with a Dremel tool and fine grinding wheel. If you feather it out and polish it smooth, I don't think that it will ever be noticed after painting. If the marks are deeply stamped, then I'd try carefully smearing a little JB Weld on the area. After curing, carefully sand the area smooth and, after painting, no one will know the difference.
I think you are right on. I like the idea of JB weld, (someone at work suggested the same), since the stamping of the manufacturer and the size of the plug is quite deep. The engine is still out, so I can do what you suggested quite easily.
Thanks,
Rainer
