Did the extra fitting opening above the oil filter, which I believe is for an external oil cooler, originally have either a square or allen head plug in it from the factory? (I assume if it hasn't been drilled through there is no need to plug it).

If I recall correctly there was a reprint of the GM instructions for mounting an external oil cooler on a C2 or C3 Corvette. The Restorer magazine reprinted those pages at one point. They were the typical GM Graphic Dept. supplied instruction sheets that were included with parts for service and installation. Some were like the Technical Service Bulletins used in the service dept. and others were cruder and more "preliminary" in their overall finish and appearance
I cannot recall the Restorer issue. If someone has the CD ROM version perhaps they could supply that additional information.
These sheets illustrated the fittings, hoses, cooler, clamps and hardware with GM part numbers. At one time these were typical “over the counter” supplied race parts.
