1966 Big Block Radiator Rail Question

I am in the process of re-coring my big block radiator. The question I have is are the top and bottom rails correct with the rectangular and square hole on each end as well as 4 small holes drilled in between? I have been told the outer holes (of the four small round holes) are correct but the inners are not. My car was built in late April. I can supply images if emailed at brett.faust@comcast.net.

Re: 1966 Big Block Radiator Rail Question

4 round holes, in addition to the square and rectangular holes, are correct on "late" '66 big block cars. Early cars only have the rectangular and square holes, but late cars have the same configuration as '67 radiators, with 4 round holes (my May 31 Bowtie car has 4 round holes).

When did this change occur, just curious on my March 18 66 L72 to see if the radiator is original. Does DeWitts core cover both cases?....Craig

Re: 1966 Big Block Radiator Rail Question

Everett, Thanks for your response. I asked this same question of Ray Morrison 66 team leader and he said no small round holes would be correct? I have seen pictures of 67 and very late 66 cars that had these holes. The vendor claims it should have the outer ones only for my April car? You have all 4 holes and have never taken a deduction?

        Thanks, Brett

Don't know what date the change...

may have come about. I have researched the AIM and can't find anything, but I believe this sort of change to the radiator would not necessarily involve a part number change, so the AIM would not show this info anyway. Harrison likely could put as many holes in the top and bottom rails as they saw fit without much or any documentation. I just re-read the Judging Guide paragraph regarding the holes, and the wording is just "odd" enough that it could be interpreted either way - "two holes, spaced apart, leading to the center." I interpret this to mean two holes on each side of the centerline of the radiator, which would be 4 holes total. As I said my Bowtie car had 4 holes (I have good pics) and I looked at every '66 and '67 big block radiator I encountered to try to determine which cars came this way. I saw lots of late cars with four holes, on what appeared to be original radiators. As the Judging Guide also states regarding early cars, my two October cars do not have the holes.
