    C2 tach cable routing

My 66 currently has the tach cable running thru the firewall hole that has the oil line and ac vacuum lines. I assume this is incorrect. I guess it is supposed to go thru the firewall thru the same hole as the speedo cable which is behind the ballast resistor. BUT the AIM (UPC 12 C3)shows 2 separate entrances and grommets for tach and speedo cable. What is correct for 66.

    Re: C2 tach cable routing

On my 63 the tach cable runs through the same hole as the oil line. The grommet has 2 holes in it. The cable is not long enough to reach if you use any other hole.
I believe all c-2 cars use the same location.

      Re: C2 tach cable routing

Mine is a 66 4 speed with ac. The AIM manual (C60 E5) shows one firewall entry to be a 4 hole grommet; oil line, wire harness, and 2 ac vacuum lines. No tach cable here. The LI corvette catalog shows 65-67 tach & speedo grommet as a 2 hole grommet but this is contradictory to the AIM manual ?????

LI corvette lists oil line grommet 63-67 as 2 hole for non ac cars and 4 hole for ac cars.

Still wondering where tach cable goes??

        Gents,
On my '65, the tach drive goes through a hole that is above and to the right of where the oil line goes through. The tach drive hole is NOT a hole that is perpendicular to the firewall. It goes diagonally through the firewall in a direction toward the speedo cluster.

        Hope this helps,
        Gene

          Gene,
My 66 has a hole behind the ballast resistor that the speedo cable now goes thru. Is this the hole you are describing? That would make sense since the catalogs describe a 2 hole grommet for tach and speedo. I would have suspected this is the routing if it weren't for the info in the AIM manual.

            Re: C2 tach cable routing

            Randy,
I don't know if there is a difference between the '65 and the '66. I hope that I'm not misleading you by describing my car.

There is a two-hole grommet behind the ballast resistor. In my case, the oil pressure line goes through one hole and the other hole is empty.

The tach drive cable goes through a hole (by itself) that is above the ballast resistor and to its (ballast resistor's) right as you are facing the fire wall. This hole, for the tach drive cable, is behind a fiberglass triangular gusset. The hole is perpendicular to the fire wall and points directly toward the instrument panel.

Regarding the speedometer cable. Mine is not routed through a two hole grommet. It is routed through a single grommet that is located about three inches directly below the bolt that holds the inboard hood latch mechanism on the driver's side.

The '65 AIM is not very good at showing the routing of the tach and spedo cables. Hope that I've done a good job of explaining.

            Good luck,
            Gene

              Re: C2 tach cable routing

              Gene,
Thanks for your input but I think I'll have to do some more research

Dr Rebuild, LI corvette and Paragon all list a 2 hole grommet for the tach and speedo cable 65-67 (4 speed). My speedo cable passes thru the triangular gusseted hole behind you mention and this hole faces the distributor. I strongly suspect this is where the tach cable should go as there would be no sharp bends in the cable. There is another larger hole about 1 1/4" dia in this area behind the ballast resistor that the oil line passes thru. As mine is an air car this appears correct, 4 hole grommet for oil line, 2 ac vacuum lines and wire harness as shown in the assembly manual. The tach line also passes thru here incorrectly.

The hole you reference about 3" below the driver side hood latch is plugged on my car. Thanks again for your help.

                Randy,
I don't know whether it makes a difference, but my '65 has an automatic and no A/C. I wonder if the speedo cable gets routed differently between the auto and the 4 speed?

Hope that you get it sorted out correctly.

                Regards,
                Gene

                  Re: C2 tach cable routing

                  Gene,
Finally got my answer from another 66 owner. The assembly manual shows the proper routing for tach and speedo in the transmission section UPC M20,M21,M22 A4. Both tach and speedo go thru the triangular gussetted hole thus the 2 hole grommett. The UPC 12 C3 page, 2 separate holes, could be the auto trans routing.
There was nothing specific in the M35 (powerglide)section re tach and speed routing
