My friend is looking at a 1958 Corvette to buy. I have seen the car and checked out the engine only. He has gotten the casting #'s for the transmission and rear axle. He would like to know if they are the correct application for this year, he doesn't have all the numbers to verify if it is correct for this car yet. The rear axle casting # is 3789812 and the transmisssion is 3885010. Thanks, for any responses, I will pass them on to him. Warren

The GM #3885010 transmission case casting number indicates a 66-67 Muncie transmission. All 1958 Corvettes with 4 speed transmission originally used a Borg Warner T-10. So, this transmission is a "retrofit".
The GM #3789812 differential housing is a positraction housing originally used for late 1961 through 1962 Corvettes. It was also used for 1962-64 Chevrolet passenger cars. However, it was never originally used on a 1958 Corvette. It's interchangeable with the 58 Corvette, though.In Appreciation of John Hinckley -

Thanks, Joe. This '58 Corvette also has a 1966 327/300 hp block with original carbs and intake correct for the car. It really is a mismatch of sorts! I'll pass the information on.Comment
