C2 Stat Housing Question

I am confused! According to the 66 TIM&JG the thermostat housing for a SB 300 horse engine should be GM#3827369, according to LIC it should be GM#3877660. I can't seem to find it in the AIM, so can someone please let me know which is correct.

If the 1966 judging guide says that the 3827369 is correct for the 1966 300 hp application, then I believe that the judging guide is incorrect on this point. 1966 Corvettes with 300 hp used the GM #3877660 thermostat housing and were among the very first Corvettes to use this housing. The 3827369 is a cast iron sand casting; the 3877660 is a permanent mold or die cast aluminum piece.

The 3827369 was used on 1966 with L-79, though.

You're awesome! I just wish that I would have known that the TIM&JG was incorrect PRIOR to spending $40.00 on something that I already have and that is correct and original.

Rob - I know this is "a dollar short and a day late," but there have been several threads on this subject in the recent past. We are in the process of updating the '66 TIM&JG and add both additional information and do our best to eliminate mis-information; so if you have identified any other areas that appear to be or are inconsistent with what you believe are original items to you car please advise Ray Morrison, the '66 Team Leader (check the Restorer for contact info), or me and we'll do our best to evaluate the situation and make the necessary recommendations for changes so the manual is as accurate as we can make it 35 plus years after production. Also, you might "ping" the board. Someone will have some opinion or experience on the subject.

And here's one place we can you you help. Is the part number information on your '66 thermostat housing on the base of the housing or on the neck where the radiator hose attaches? I'd appreciate it if you would let me know this along with the S/N of the car. You can E-mail me off line if you wish. Thanks for your help and hopefully, we'll have things more accurate in the next revision so others don't have this experience in their restoration. Regards, Pete

First, thanks for taking the time to investigate. The thermostat housing on my 66, vin#19467s121064 (May 5), is stamped with the following on the neck:

GM 3877660

Under this part number is a small 0, then a triangle with three letters inside it too small for me to make out (could be A over DC), and then followed finally by 1C. The attaching bolts are hex-head with headmarks of RSC (longer) and TR (shorter).

I can't promise that mine is original and I am by no means an expert on the matter (the car was built before I was born!!). But, I would appreciate your thoughts.

Pete - my 67 K19 A.I.R. was incorrectly portrayed in the 67 TIM&JG on the point it called out a stamped steel air pump bracket. It is a cast part, for 66/67 only, slightly different configuration than the 68 up bracket. I have several close up pictures on file comparing the two, I sent to Joe and Kieth Biggers about a year ago. Keith was going to change the 67 manual to correct it, I bet it is wrong in the 66 manual also. You can email me offline for more discussion, and photos if I can find them again...Craig
