Starter #1107776...Joe Lucia??

I have a starter that came with some loose parts when I bought my 1966 L79 this year. I can't find it in any books I have, and suspect that it is not from a Corvette. It is a 1107776 and is dated..0 J 13..which I read as made September 13, 1970. Anyone have any idea what this is for?

Starter GM #1107776 was used on 1964 Oldsmobiles with 330 or 394 cid engines. Considering the date on yours, it must have started its life as a SERVICE starter for the above application.

As I have mentioned previously, most of the GM starters have a common starter frame (the barrel shaped section) on which the numbers are stamped. Once these things get into a commercial rebuilder's inventory, the starters are stripped down to basic components. Then, they're re-assembled into rebuilt units from the "parts bins" of the commercial rebuilder. Once this occurs, the number on the frame has absolutely no meaning, whatsoever. It's just an "historical artifact".

Due to the confusion which these numbers create on starters and alternators, some commercial rebuilders have taken the step of grinding them off or otherwise obliterating them.

Yes, it was also used for 1961 and 1962 Oldsmobile, so given the date, it probably originally resided on a 1961 Oldsmobile.
