Good day Corvetter's. Anyone have thoughts as to the exhaust sytem on my 1963 340HP. It's December production car with 2.5" pipes, mandrel bends. When the system was disassembled for cleaning observed what to be GM part numbers located on the pipe where the header pipe and rear pipe are joined near the tranny. What puzzles me is the system consists of the header pipe, center pipe, then muffler...3 sections. According to the NCRS technical guide the system should consist of 2 sections. Thanks Mike #28614

Re: '63 Exhaust System
Mike-----
I'd say that, at least, some components of the system have been replaced somewhere along the line. The forward exhaust pipes are usually pretty long- lived. Even the rear pipes can live a long time if they're not subjected to a lot of EXTERNAL corrosion. The mufflers, particularly the right side muffler, are VERY, VERY unlikley to last 40 years. Curiously, the mufflers are what sounds like have been replaced. When the original welded-on mufflers are replaced with SERVICE parts, GM or otherwise, the original mufflers are cut off and new ones attached at a bell joint which is part of the SERVICE muffler pipe extension. The joint may then be clamped or welded.
I consider it VERY unlikely that any vestige of a GM part number would have survived on either the front or rear exhaust pipe. Usually, the numbers would be affixed via a paper tag or printed on with ink. I've never seen a GM pipe, SERVICE or PRODUCTION, with an embossed part number, but it is possible that some had them. In any event, even if there is a GM part number present it does not mean that the pipe is original to the car-----it could be a GM SERVICE replacement. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: '63 Exhaust System
Ditto what Joe said. I still have the original pipes on my SWC, but had to replace the RH muffler circa '66 and the RH circa '68. I wired the heat riser open to keep the RH muffler from rusting out again.
