    C2 convertible rear deck

I have not found info in the TIM&JG regarding what was originally used to plug the hard top mounting holes in the top of the rear deck when the hard top was not in place. When washing my car I use a couple of corks but that is probably not what The General used! Comments appreciated. Thanks

Metal plugs were used. I dont remember if they are stainless or chrome, but they are available in repro. All the big carriers have them in their cataloges. I think the corks seal better though.

On my 65 I used the bolts that hold the bolted the top just behind the door with nuts and washers on them to fill the holes. Didn't leak significantly and just left them there until I put the HT back on.

The bolts that fit into the spring clips from the underside of the Hard top, the ones with rubber washers and rubber tips are what is used to plug those two holes...they are stainless. After you remove your hardtop you remove those two bolts and re-insert them into your decklid.

Along with the two #3827499 washers between the nuts and the bottom of the lid, to seal out water; they weren't used under the nuts for the hardtop installation (as shipped), as the bolts are inboard of the hardtop rear weatherstrip and not exposed to water. They were in the bag with the wrench when the C07 cars left St. Louis, as noted in the UPC 0 Miscellaneous Shipping List and in the C07 Section, Sheet A6.

John, are you saying that the only the washers were in the bag? Or possibly another set of bolts? I have always thought that it was unlikely that it was intended that you take off the bolts installed on the hardtop to use in this application. I know that this is what everyone thinks is the case, but the hardtop side mounting bolt is a better looking choice, since it has a nice finish and the original pin bolt has a ground off surface. Also the factory used the dum-dum or seam sealer on the pin bolt to hold it in place while installing. Sure would be nice to leave that in there to help the new owner to install that top also. Unless there is some documentation or instruction sheet, and since they just provided the washers, it should be just as proper to use the side hex bolt.

              Wayne -

The A.I.M. sez the seal washers were in the bag with the wrench when the car was shipped (with the top installed) - notes it in two places. I just use the snap-in flush stainless plugs everybody sells instead so the rubber-tipped hardtop bolts aren't sticking down into the folded top stack.
