Hello..
I purchased a "basket case" 63 split-window. Most of the car is in parts. I am trying to determine in the frame is original #S115260 & if the rear-end is correct #3899143?? If you have any info that would be great!!
Thanks
There are many sources to help with the numbers trail, Nolan as well as the NCRS library. With any mid-year, knowing the exact configuration is impossible unless you have the build sheet or a window sticker. With the library you will be able to tell correct part numbers for the rear, but the exact ratio will be a problem. As an example, if you had a rear that had the correct part number, but was coded CB 12-20-62, you would have a 3:36 posi rear built December 20, 1962. But the body build date may be earlier or much later depending on the sequence number. As far as the frame, the last 5 numbers of the VIN will be on the frame in two locations. 1) left side top by the rear wheel, 2) left side by the drivers leg. The Judging manual will help a great deal.
The frame is original if the VIN derivative that you found matches the last 7 characters of the car's VIN. This will be found on the plate below the glove box or on the registration/ownership certificate that you received with the car.
The differential unit is NOT original to the car. The carrier housing casting number that you mentioned was used for late 1966 through 1979 Corvettes. It was NOT used for 1963.
