How does '58 steering column cover attach?

This is that half cylindrical cover that goes under the steering column and butts up to the bottom of the guage cluster.

It has a slot and the bottom of the steering column has a slot, but there doesn't seem to be a nut in the column behind the slot. Wussup wit dis?

Mike, there is a stamped steel horse shoe shaped bracket that the cover actually attaches to. It attaches on each side of the cluster. If you don't have one, you could probably manufacture a replacement pretty easily.

      That makes sense

Somehow I wasn't comfortable with the idea of a screw going into the column! I'm looking in Mary Jo's catalog and see the bracket you're talking about. It's $12. Thanks as always, Ed!
