HELP, need oil change help, Quick....

Have 73 big block 4-speed. Apparently prior owner welded the oil filter on, or at least seems that way. Filter is crushing on me. Need advise before I go any futher.

Yes it may seem like it is welded, but the person just put it on much to tight. You will have to continue taking it off by what ever means possible. Do not bang on it, you may damage the mounting surface. Just keep twisting, if possible near the top near the threads. You may have to use a chain wrench. When you put your new one on, follow the instruction that come with the filter. Good luck.

Tom --- I've seen these screw-on oil filters on so tight that mechanics just drive a punch through, close to the top (drain pan underneath, of course), then insert a heavy rod or bar, protruding from both sides, and torque on that.

As John says, follow the instructions with the new one; if the contact surfaces are free of dirt, they really only reqire a half turn (if memory serves) with a filter wrench, after hand snug.

            Tom,

If it isn't to late, go to any auto parts store and buy the special wrench used that fits around bottom of filter. They are cheap (less than 10.00) and will fit most filters. Beware of strap/chain wrenchs, if the filter is REALLY tight they can puncture filter. If this has already happened, you may have to cut filter off close to top, then use a chizel very carefully on the reinforced metal at the top of filter. Look at a new filter to see exactly the area I refer to. Be sure to liberly oil the new gasket and fill new filter with oil. Tighten only hand tight. Bill

                Got It.

OT IT. Neighbor's brother happened to be visiting and he had a device that looked like it came out of the middle-ages. It would get ahold of anything.

                Thanks all.
