    FI pump drive cable

A friend called me this evening seeking advice. His 61 FI has a broken pump drive cable. I have a spare cable to loan him, but he says that the old cable is broken off flush in the fuel pump. It looks to me like he will have to completely disassemble the pump to remove the cable end unless he can fish it out some way. Any advice or thoughts?

Sounds like a good time for a shaft and seal kit.

You're right, of course. However, we're just trying to get it running right now and got a deadline (this weekend). Don't want to stop and order parts from out of town unless we just have to.

Clup is correct but since time is of the essence, remove high press pump(if a magnet won't retrieve broken end of drive shaft and doubt it will)then remove the broken piece and re-install pump. wouldn't be a bad idea to cleanse varnish deposits(bet the car satfor months with today's inferior, varnish prone gasoline before drive cable broke). From now on, if car to sit for months before being run, add gasoline stabilizer to tank to hopefully prevent varnish reformation.good luck, mike PS: rebuild and re seal high pressure pump when time allows

Ed, Is the pump shaft free. I've seen the pumps rust together with a broken cable the result. Just a thought. Paul

Dunno. The car had sat up for a while, which is probably related to the pump cable failure. I'm going to give him a cable, a FI manual, a little advice and stand back and see what happens!

Had a discussion with Dr. dick thompson years ago and he said they didn't use the cable housing, just the drive cable. he said it facilitated a quick replacement of drive cable if one broke during a race. Said they always carried a couple drive cables in the glove box during races. mike PS you coming down this weekend for the autocross at the airport. a VIP from pittsburg SCCA is coming to check out the operation in hopes of having a SCCA Regional here next summer. mike

                  Mike,
Grady's Gulf Oil GS used a quick disconnect fitting on the fuel line where it enters the F.I. dog house. (to this day) I have no idea why the Gulf Oil team saw fit to do this. Any thoughts? Regards,

Makes a great anti-theft tool. Pop the hood, slip the drive cable in your pocket, shut the hood and walk away. Car will NOT start.

REMENBER==I can"t remember what years , but there are different cables some longer and others shorter housing and cable. I think the 57 to 62 is shorter??? some one jump in.

                        Mission Accomplished

The pump had indeed gotten gummed up from sitting. The pump has been freed up and is back together. Haven't had a report on whether he got it running though.

                          Re: Mission Accomplished

I would suggest, if you let your F.I. equipped engine sit without starting for a while, undo the H.P fuel pump drive cable. Figure out a way to check that the H.P. fuel pump is still happy. That means that it will still turn with your fingers. If it will not, best undo that problem before trying to continue. Otherwise, its $25 per mistake. Dennis

$42+ from Corvette Central, plus shipping. Letting FI engines sit more than a few weeks at a time is not a good idea. Besides which, the car needs to be driven. Prevents all manner of ills.
