Last week the old horror story happened to me. Either the heater core or control valve on my 1970 300hp no AC coupe dumped at least a quart of fluid on the carpet. Does anyone know of a how to article for changing these parts? Thanks

I own a similar car which was with a faulty heater. I dissasembled it from the engine bay. With no AC its just a matter of some bolts, patience and work. You will be able to repair the core, or replace it. In non AC manual cars the system is a constant flow type, no water valve. The Corvette Fever article is very good but they dissas. from the interior, a total rebuild in a 77 with AC. All my best from Argentina Roberto NCRS #30019 RMCRoberto J Luis

I've helped people replace the heater core in a non-air '76 and a non-air '71, and even though we could take things apart enough to see the heater core from the engine side, we couldn't figure out a way to remove the core without going in through the interior. Is there something that we missed? I get recruited by friends periodically to help with this chore, and I sure would like to know anything that makes the job easier.

I agree with Bill. I know of no way to remove the heater core from the engine bay. The heater core is mounted within the inner heater box. I don't understand how it could be removed without first removing the inner heater box.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Bill,
There was mention of an "easy" removal in a similar post a week or so ago. It had to do with removing only 4 or 5 of the nuts on the exterior side of the firewall, which would coincide with removing the heater box from the interior. I've replaced two heater cores, et al, myself and remember THINKING of doing the same thing each time.
The problem I had was that the angle of the inlet and outlet tubes to the core itself prevented me from removing the core without disassembling both sides. If there is a "simple" procedure out there, it would be of great benefit to us to know. Tom- Top

Looking back in the archives, I believe they were talking about a non-air '66 (and a '65 also came up in the thread). I don't know whether or not the mid-years are any different than the sharks in this respect.
Since my car is a '75 air car, I'm quite used to having to get at the heater core through the dash. When I went to change the heater core on a friend's non-air '76, I got quite excited when, upon removing the "blower fan box", the heater core was sitting right there in front of me. My excitement turned to disappointment, however, when I could find no way to remove the sucker without having to go through the dash. Oh well such is life. If there's an easier way, I'd sure love to know it.
