Need help to find the '67 frame VIN #

I read the recent messages on the subject of finding the frame VIN # with much enthusiasm. In particular, I am trying to find the VIN # stamping located on the left hand side of the frame somewhere in the area of the rear "kickup". I am hoping the experienced people out there can help me zero in on where exactly it should be. I have tried to examine the outboard frame member from the the area just above where the trailing arm pivot bolt is, all the way up to where the frame rear section almost becomes horizontal near the wheel centerline. All that I can see is dusty dirt and very slight rusting. There does not appear to be any sign of a "St. Louis whack". I have not as of yet used a wire brush on the areas described, only some medium steel wool. I did notice that there is a hole in the frame very near to the wheel centerline. Using this hole as a reference point, can anyone tell me how far and in which direction from this hole the stamping should be located ? Is the stamping parallel to the frame member or stamped across it ? I wonder if back in Mar.'67, the operator on the assembly line in St. Louis whose job it was to stamp the frame was on coffee break when my car went through his station and missed it.

Thanks in advance for your help.

    Craig----

The VIN number is usually stamped on the TOP surface of the left side(drivers) frame rail just forward of the #4 body mount. It is stamped parallel to the frame rail.

Craig --- Go farther back on the frame, to a few inches forward of the rear body mount. Later '65's and ( I think) all '66 and '67's were whacked there, about ½" in from the outside face of the frame, and parallel to the body, with digits reading left to right (front to rear). Feel for the slight depression (3 fingers wide), located about 1½" rearward of another hole on the top-middle of the frame. Good hunting; ----- Wayne

            Craig,

I have been able to locate the stamped number on both a 66 and 67 using the same information Wayne and Joe have offered. There will be plenty of folks to dis-approve me but: locating and seeing the number is one thing, being able to READ it is another. The two I observed there had significant rust and "paint fill". Use whatever means you can (brush, wool, mirror, etc) and best wishes. Tom.

Wayne is right about the location on the 67's. I know that some of the 65's were stamped much farther forward. I'm doing a frame off on my 67 SB (built early december, 66), and the frame stamping is extremely light. After blasting off the rust (of which there was very little in that area), I could hardly make out the numbers, even after using steel wool, etc. The first digit (7) was the most visible, so I knew where to look for the number, but if the body were not off, there would be NO WAY to see it.
