    68 BB power steering pump?

Can someone give me a better description of what the power steering pump on my BB 68 should look like. My tech manual is unclear to me. I am aware of the pumps that have a tear drop shape (filler neck and housing are all one piece). Mine has a neck that is almost as large as the housing, it is oval, and tapers as it approaches the main body of the housing. It does not appear to be slanted forward from what I can tell. It is really sort of packed in there. Does this sound like the right one? Regards to all, Terry

    Terry-----

The one you have sounds like the correct GENERAL configuration. However, although the 63-74 Corvette power steering pump resevoirs are similar in configuration to the passenger car resevoirs of the same period, they are not the same. The Corvette resevoirs are unique to Corvette. In addition, there were several used over the 63-74 period that are slightly different, too. Primarily, the difference relates to the "angular configuration" of the vertical fill tube.

Joe, thanks for your comment. I will probably have a chance to look at it closer before spring. I am left wondering because there is a nut or bolt that the cap has a hard time clearing to be removed. Very tight quarters to get at it. Thanks, Terry

Joe - I know the style you mention in general vs the teardrop tank. I am specifically interested in getting a correct tank for my 66 L72. Also, internally, I belive the pumps are the same, BUT, there is a pressure relief valve difference in the pump that controls the maximum pressure bleed off between pass cars and vettes as I recall, any way to tell this on a pump to see if I have the right one? I am fairly convinced that the rebuilders loose all of this stuff.......Craig

          Craig-----

The p/s pump pressure valves for most passenger cars and Corvettes were the same. No difference, at all. The 63-69 valves and the 70-82 valves are a little different, but it's the same for passenger car and Corvette for the year ranges. 1963 to 82 relief spring (which controls pressure) was the same for all Corvettes and passenger cars.

Corvette power steering pumps used an internal filter; passenger car did not.

There were 3 different resevoirs used on Corvettes during the 63-74 period and these, particular, resevoirs were unique to Corvettes. 1963 Corvettes used a unique resevoir; 64-66 used a unique resevoir; 67 to 74 used a unique resevoir. These resevoirs differed only slightly and the differences had to do with the configuration of the return line nipple and/or the configuration of the attachment of the welded-on filler neck. I do not know the exact nature of the differences and likely could not describe them if I did.

The last available SERVICE p/s pump resevoir for 63-74 Corvettes replaced all of the earlier Corvette resevoirs, but it was still a Corvette-only item. Basically, this was a "one-size-fits-all" sort of piece. The "reproduction" resevoir currently available is a "reproduction" of this SERVICE resevoir.

1975+ resevoirs are, of course, completely different.

Thx Joe - I appreciate the insight. I guess I was thinking of the filter, for some reason I also thought the relief pressure was different, glad to know I don't have to worry about that. I guess on the tank configuration, I won't worry about the slight differences for now...thx!....Craig
