I have been unable to locate a replacement lower shifter boot for a 1964 Corvette Powerglide. Does anyone know where I could find a lower boot, or at least have a suggestion for an alternative solution? I drive the car almost daily and do not plan on showing it anytime soon. The old boot is pretty far gone and I can see the road rushing by through it. Air superheated by the exhaust pipes is flooding the interior of the car with surprising force. If there is a practical way to provide at least partial relief I would love to hear about it.

As far as I know, the 1964 lower boot with Powerglide is not currently reproduced. This was a unique-to-1964 piece. However, I think that you may be able to use a 64-67 4 speed boot as a functional replacement. That boot is available in reproduction. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 1964 Lower Shifter Boot for PG
I made a temp replacement using oil cloth and making folds to the outer edges to end up with a somewhat cone shape. It works pretty good, but I wish someone would make a repro, which I don't think will happen. I've thought about using the four speed boot and wrapping electrical tape around the shift lever so the lever fills up the hole in the boot, but since I've already have a makeshift boot that works, I doubt if I'll go to the trouble.- Top

Thanks Joe. I might just try the homemade route knowing that it worked for you and because you can't really see the lower boot from inside the car anyway. Any tips for getting at the lower boot? You do not have to drop the transmission or anything like that do you?- Top

Bruce, you have to get at it from the top. remove the radio panels. remove the console, if you have PW first disconnect the battery and then remove the screws holding the PW switch to the bottom side of the console. You will have to remove the padded armrest. There is a stamped steel plate that screws to the transmission tunnel in which both boots are sandwiched.- Top

Re: 1964 Lower Shifter Boot for PG
Joe, thanks for the input. Nice to hear I will not have to crawl around under the car. If I have enough of the old boot left to use as a guide, I might look into what it would take to have a replacement made. It's just molded rubber right? I'm sure it would be fairly expensive/time consuming to make a mold, but it could be a fun project. Do you think I could find a few folks out there who would be willing to buy a reproduction even if it was rough? I believe that over just 1000 1964's had PG's. Not enough of a market to get rich off of, but probably enough to cover the cost with a little beer more left over, not to mention helping other people out with the same problem.- Top

Bruce, If you're willing to spend the time to make a mold, I'm willing to spend the time to buy one of the boots from you. Hopefully, your boot is still in good enough condition to get some decent measurements. I made the mistake of tossing my old one back when such things were not important. Joe- Top
