I have heard all types of advise in reference to setting timing for best performance using advance timing light etc. Please give me your ideas in how I should go about testing and setting my timing. What is the best timing light to use and where is it available from? Also what should I be happy with on my compression. I have the orginal LS5 engine with about 108,000 miles on it.

Re: 71 timing and compression
Ed,
If you engine internals are all original, I suggest you change out your original timing chain and gears. The gears were made of nylon and can wear out before the chain. The results can be catastrophic.
You might want to get the last two issues of Corvette Enthusiast magazine (formerly Cars&Parts Corvette). John Hinkley has written a couple of nice articles that explain the distributor timing for our older cars.Tony- Top

Another helpful tool will be the specification for your car. You can get the complete AMA Specifications for your car for free by ordering the restoration package from GM Customer Service at 800-222-1020. My package came in today. I ordered it last week. Good luck.Tony- Top
