    C3-Shifter noise

Does anyone here have an inexpensive cure to stop the rattle of a stock 73 4-speed shifter. I gave the reverse lock out a shot of DW-40, but it appears it is just loose enough to rattle at any speed.

The car is not vibrating to any extent. The rattle almost becomes a hum until, clasped by hand and held quite firmly.

    thanks

Check to be sure that the shifter lever control shaft retainer has not "departed". This is a "c" clip that goes on the outboard side of the shaft.

If this is not a problem, the shifter might just be suffering from wear. Rebuilding or replacement might be the only 100% solution.

I've quieted down several of these with a few wraps of electrical tape around the existing plastic bushing on the lever shaft (to get a tighter fit of the "T"-handle I.D. to the lever shaft bushing O.D.) and placing an "O"-ring at the "step" on the lever shaft where the bottom of the "T"-handle seats (to isolate the "T"-handle from the lever at that point). 5-minute job - just unscrew the ball, remove the spring and "T"-handle, apply O-ring and tape to suit, trial-fit, and re-assemble). If that doesn't calm it down, you'll have to go below the boot for a fix.

I'd recommend trying John's suggestion first. If that does the trick, you'll save a lot of effort.
