I was working on my 72 454 putting headman headers on it last night. I got the drivers side in. I had to dent tube #3 to get it to clear the steering box but after that it fit in good. I am going to put the drivers side in tonight and finish putting in the remote starter solinoid ( i don't want any hot start problems that will occur with the headers). Can't wait to hear what it sounds like. Eric

Re: 72 454 headman headers.
Eric,
On some cars installing headers can be a real wrestling match. Rather than denting them to clear something wether installing from top or bottom put a block of wood under the motor with a jack and unbolt the motor mount on the side your working on so you can jack the motor some to get that little extra clearance you might need. Good luck.

Re: 72 454 headman headers.
Eric; I put a 454 crate motor in my wifes 73 with headers and had to "flatten" the #3 tube slightly to not "rattle" against the stearing box as well. I also dented slightly the #1 tube to gain better access to the spark plug/ boot. By the way I would do headers again and the sound/performance are WELL worth it. It seems to me the #4/6 tube was flattened very slightly to not rub on the frame with torque rock, which is very small with the polyuerathane motor mounts.

Re: 72 454 headman headers.
John, I noticed too that the #1 and #3 sparkplug boots lay on the header. I have the straight sparkplug ends now. I am going to get some 90 degree ends for those. I am going to put the other header on tonight and also finish wiring the remote starter solinoid. What mufflers do you have? I have stock one's now and they are too quiet.

Re: 72 454 headman headers.
Eric; Craig is correct, the 135 degree boots fit best. We have "dyno max" mufflers on the car with 2 1/2 in inlets and outlets in the stock position and I think they are too quiet but my wife thinks they are fine and it's her car! I had a tough time for a while burning the boot (with Taylor wires and their "space age covers") but I found the carb was jetted too lean and have since cured the problem. My (18 year old) son has 50 series "flow master" mufflers on his 350 c.i. 72 short narrow pick-up and they are too load for me in my advanced hot rod state(48 years old).
