Re: eBay oilpan.....whooooooowee !!
tracy----
"13pack" is into Corvair stuff now.
Anyway, this is a case of TWO guys going in with a "killer" last minute bid to ensure that they got the item, figuring that they wouldn't have to actually pay anywhere near that much. That works to ensure being winning bidder on an item PROVIDING that not more than one person does it. When TWO people do it, it gets REAL expensive for one of them. In this type of deal, I think that the "winner" is actually the "loser" and the "loser" is the "winner". I had it happen to me ONCE. I ended up being the "loser" that was the "winner", especially after I thought about it.
Prices like this might make a guy like me with several NOS examples of these pans in his collection think about e-mailing the second high bidder. For better or for worse, though, NONE of my parts are for sale. Even at these prices. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Bet the seller is still stunned with disbelief..
From his desciption, he really didn't even know what he was selling... Hope the buyer doesn't have a power steering car.
As far as the guy coming in second being the "winner", I agree with you. I doubt if he would pay his bid price even if you did try to sell him one.

Re: eBay oilpan.....BID Jump ????
Bill-----
The bid jumped from $252 to $700 because of the fact that TWO guys bid a ridiculous price in order to "ensure" being the high bidder. The $700 bidder is the "loser" of the 2, but it was his bid that resulted in the winning bidder having to pay $710. If it were not for the $700 bidder, the "winning" bidder's high bid would have gone to $263 and he would have won the pan. And, if it were not for the guy who bid OVER $710, the gut that bid $700 and came in second would have won the pan for $263. Both of these guys were counting on the fact that they would be the ONLY ones with a ridiculous bid. In other words, both were counting on the fact that they'd be the only idiot. The trouble is, idiocy is not so uncommon.
Lesson learned: NEVER, EVER bid more on an item than you can pay or would feel comfortable paying. ALWAYS COUNT on the fact that you'll have to pay your MAXIMUM BID. Then, if you get it for less, consider it a "bargain".In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: eBay oilpan.....whooooooowee !!
clem-----
If the seller agress to a lesser price, he's a complete fool. Among other things, how does he know that the 2nd high bidder wouldn't be willing to pay his maximum bid of $700 for the item? Or, even if the 2nd bidder were unwilling to pay the $700, how does he know what price that he'd be willing to pay?
If the high bidder attempts to "negotiate" a lower price, if the seller was at all smart, he'd tell the high bidder that he talked to the 2nd bidder and that person agreed to pay him $700. Then, if he wants to further negotiate down the price, he'd tell him that if he didn't pay his bid price in full, he'd report him to eBay as a non-paying bidder and leave negative feedback. If I were the seller ABSOLUTELY NO WAY would I let the seller out of the deal or let him negotiate a lower price. His bid is a CONTRACT. That's how bidding works and it's completely unfair to other bidders if sellers don't hold winning bidders to the price they bid. Period. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: eBay oilpan.....BID Jump ????
Joe
Guess it's important to know the value before bidding. Once the NOS pan is painted orange, it will be hard to tell this one from one that had minor repairs & restoration.
$710 for an oil pan. WOW is that pricy.

In this case, the original box came with it; that's pretty good asurance that it's a new item. Also, in this case, the pan was painted black. GM oil pans were supplied 4 different ways over the years. Some early SERVICE pans were painted Chevrolet orange right out of the box. Later, the paint changed to "corporate blue" and later yet to "corporate black". I think that these changes corresponded time-wise to the change in colors for GM engines.
Many Corvette pans came out of the box unpainted, too. I don't know why some were painted and some not.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: eBay oilpan.....whooooooowee !!
Joe - I agree....only once on Ebay did I bid more than I knew something was really worth just because I wanted it at that time and didn't want to look later. It is a contract, and you honor it....period.....stupidity or not. In my case, it was not this crazy though.......but if I had been that buyer I would pay....period, disbelief or not, I would have signed a contract......no different than any other, even though some people seem to think it is a game....Craig- Top

Remember the $502 dipstick earlier?
That had to be the all time lunacy. It was supposedly a 67 BB dipstick, but was actually the part you can buy today through the GMPD......for $5 list. Wonder if he really paid the $502......now that was absurd......thx!.....Craig- Top
