    C2 day/night inside mirror

The interior mirror for my 66 has a dark discoloration type stain on the mirror glass. I tried glass cleaner but it is not dirt but a stain. Is there a cleaner or chemical that will clean this up or must I purchase a replacement?

    Thanks,
    Dave Kitch

    Dave -

It's the silver on the back of the mirror that's deteriorating; time to have it refurbished. Carol Fish does terrific work on these - swapped my '67 inside mirror with the same issue you have for one of hers at Orlando last year for $45.00; can't be told from new. Don't use glass cleaners containing ammonia (which all of them do) on it - that's what blackens the silvering on the back of the glass.

      John,

I've heard of her. I was also told that you can only see her at the big shows and that she does not mail order. Could you confirm and if she does mail order sales, provide her tel.#

      Thanks,
      Dave Kitch

        Dave,

Carol Fish does not do mail orders. However, her contact information is: Carol Fish, 2724 Windsor Forest Drive, Louisville, KY 40272, 502-933-3734. What I did was give my old mirror as a core to a friend going to Orlando and he arranged a swap with Carol. I generally don't like to swap my original parts for other (even restored) parts, but in this case there was no alternative. I'm very happy with the mirror I got in exchange. Carol does great work.

            Dave,
You may also want to check with MIRRORS Restored. They had a nice display at Carlisle and their work looked excellent. I think that they would resilver your mirror, if keeping it appeals to you.

Contact information is: Robert Kauffman at (717) 938-2731.

            Good luck,
            Gene

John, Re: your statement about not using glass cleaner w/amonia on a rr view mirror: How does the amonia contact the silvering if it is on the back of the glass? Something to do w/vapors? Just curious. Thanx!

It wicks into joints and into crevises

                Don,

The liquid wicks its way around the edge molding and gets to the backside that way.

If you spray it sparingly on a cloth first, you'll probably never have a problem, but most folks just spray it on the mirror first, and it dribbles down inside the mirror through the lower seal.

                    Re: Mirror cleaner

                    Gents,
When I purchased an expensive mirror for the house, the glass man told me never to use ordinary glass cleaner (with ammonia) for the reasons mentioned.

He recommended a 50/50 mixture of isopropyl rubbing alcohol and water. You know, the kind of alcohol that you buy for the medicine cabinet. About a buck for 16 fl oz. Makes a quart of glass and mirror cleaner.

                    Safe motoring!
