After 4 long years of restoration I finally started my 300 HP 62 today. It lit off on the first crank and surprisingly the timing set statically was almost right on. The only problem was that the thermostat never opened and I had to shut it down. The upper hose didn't get warm. Before I started it I removed the thermostat, filled the block with water and reinstalled the thermostat. I also filled the expansion tank which did get hot. I'll check out the thermostat tomorrow in a pot on the stove, but assuming it tests ok, any other ideas??

Re: First Start on 62
you don't mention the opening temp of the thermostat you installed. the upper rad hose won't get hot to touch until the engine reaches X degrees(x being the opening temp of the thermostat) once the thermo.opens, coolant will flow thru rad thru thermo and back into engine. don't rely on C-1 temp guage/ sending unit accuracy till you've checked operating temps with a more accurate device(digital pyrometer my favorite) as most c-1 temp readings are questionable till you've sorted out guage/ sending unit.- Top

Re: First Start on 62
John,
I 2nd what mike said. Just this past weekend in 45 degree weather my 327/300 idled for 20 minutes w/o the thermostat opening and it's a 160 degree (relax....i'm changing it to 180). I thought the gauge might not be working but the upper hose was cool and not pressurized, and the engine wasn't scorching -- determined by the very scientific valve cover touch test.
