I've rewired the car's main front and rear harnesses - I didn't do all the little harneses that didn't come with the main harness - sure enough the turn signal harness shorted out and melted into mess - I just got my new turn signal harness and was going to try to install it this tomorrow (have a rally this weekend) - I don't find this harness in the assembly manual - Any tips or suggestions??

Re: 61 turn signal harness installation ??'s
Cynthia: the c-1 shop manual or a 53-54 chevy pass car shop manual will outline the proceedure. essentially, remove steering wheel(puller will be needed) carefuly dissect down to the turn signal mechanical apparatus. the turn sig. harness will have to be removed in a towards the rear of the car fashion after you've disconnected the males from the females(on top the steering col about half way between steering wheel and inner face of firewall. if you're gonna rally this weekend and the dir. signals are needed', you'd better get on it right away.mike- Top

Here's the short version
Disconnect the battery.
Remove the horn button and contact
remove nut on steering wheel and the wheel (use a proper puller on the wheel. If you don't you will likely damage the wheel)
Remove the ts lever and cancel cam
Remove ts switch. No problem to fish the new wires down the column.
COnnect new wires as per color match
Reinstall switch, cancel cam (making sure pin on cam is in hole in switch, reassemble reverse of teardown.
Be sure the tapered washer is underneath the spring if it was removed.
Very straightforward repair.- Top

Re: Here's the short version
When I bought a new Lectric turn signal harnes, it wasn't exaclty as original. The original wires were all bonded together, LL were individual. I was concerned that they would get tangled or at least possibly rub on the steering shaft. What I did was straighten out the new wires as best as I could and smear both sides (one side one day and the other side the next) with silicon to hold them together, actually I laid them on duct tape to hold them untill I applied the silicon and it set. Worked well and I feel comfortable that the wires won't rub... Maybe it wasn't necessary but I did it anyway...- Top

Re: Here's the short version
If you decide not to bond the wires together, be sure to tape the terminal ends together for sliding the wires thru the steering column. I taped them flat in two places, as Jim suggests, thus preventing any tangleing and this also allows them to be in the correct direction for connecting up.- Top

Re: Thanks
Got the turn signal harness switched out with no problems - and only took a couple hours (but I had to read the directions on how to use the steering wheel puller??) - they only bad thing was I also had to go get a new fuse because the signals wouldn't blink. Thanks for your help!!!
