Need Tires - Please Help w/ recommendations

I have some 20 year old Firestone tires on my 71 Vette. One has cracks & is leaking. I need to replace them.

I would like a set of nice-handling tires with raised white letters.

    Any recommendations

Be sure that they're not original and that someone might not want them for judging. If so, I'll bet Todd H would like them. He needs some for driving. (This is a joke. It is only intended as such.)

Seriously, our selections are limited. For show, there's really only the reproductions if you want the most points. If for driving you will first have to decide on size. Then, there are much better tires available in blackwall than in RWL.

I'm sure Duke will join in, but I'd look at his article from the last couple issues of the Restorer. Or, feel free to see the voluminous information in the Archives, even recently. This issue has almost been discussed to death.

Doc, yer right, this question gets asked once or twice a week. Poor old Duke must be wore out from talking about tires. I wonder if John would just consider building a banner for the top of the page with driving, judging, and performance tire recommendations for C1s, C2s, and C3s. It would conserve server space...and Duke's typing fingers. (C4 owners haven't started asking yet; I guess their vehicles aren't obsolescent.)

Peter, I too am looking for a new set of tires for my 68 big block. Patrick has given you sound advice:- refer to Duke Williams' articles in the Restorer on police pursuit tires.

I have taken Duke's recommendations to research independantly and, after having done so, concluded that he is absolutely correct:- tires that are both "dressy" and "suitable for a performance car like a Corvette" simply do not exist.

Black walled tires appear to be to only practical choice for a car that is actually driven...just like Duke said!

The Goodyear and General police pursuit tires are available in blackwall or narrow whitewall. The Firestone is blackwall only. Personally, I'm a blackwall guy.

If one insists on raised white letters you will end up with low performance tires.

              Try Kelsey

              Peter,
Try this website (Kelsey Tire) at the bottom of my message for your tires. I've been told they have correct tires for 1968-69 Corvettes. Maybe they also have correct tires for 1970-1972?
