Looking at a 58-59 Vette but the VIN is MIA. Where else is the VIN stamped on this car. Are there any on the frame?? Also what is a project car like this worth?? Trim and chrome off, body and drivetrain together, no top, will take some work just to make a driver. Thanks Larry

Re: 58 or 59 VIN Missing help!!!
Serial # should be stamped on the top of the frame roughy underneath the driver's door. Unless the serial number (No VINS in those days) can be established and proper paperwork accompany the car, it isn't worth a whole lot unless you plan to make a vintage racer or somethig else that doesn't have to be registered.- Top

ED- Question?? Thanks!!
Thanks Ed, it is coming out of a state that did not use titles untill 1980. My State says with a letter, on letterhead paper, from the Dept of Motor Vehicles sellers State, and a notized bill of sale from the owner (same owner 25 years now) I can get a good title. Does this sound right?? Next question, does any make the VIN tags nowadays.- Top

Re: ED- Question?? Thanks!!
I have a little personal knowledge of this , since I live in a state which still doesn't title cars earlier than about 1985. The general answer is yes, but you are still going to have to find the serial number in order to establish the identity of the car. Is this number on the registration? If so, I'd sure be looking at the frame with a good light and a mirror to see if I could confirm the number.
Replacement tags are available, but you have to jump through a lot of hoops to firmly establish that you are the lawful owner of the vehicle and that the serial number of the car is the serial number you are requesting to have made. Also, has the car ever been totaled by an insurance company? If so, it may be that the only legitimate title you can get is a salvage title, and/or state issued VIN. Note I said legitimate title. There are all sorts of ways around the title issue, many of which are legal, at least kinda/sorta.- Top
